Consider, too, the time element involved. It could take days and days, literally, to set up even 20 reciprocal links. Hours sitting in front of the computer, frustration growing with each passing day...and for what? A handful of dubious links? You should be closing sales, not chasing reciprocal links!

You can pay for links, of course, but your bank balance had better be healthy. For they'll cost you an arm and a leg, even for a small number. Or you could sign up with one of a number of link sites which require you to download a common page once a month. The page, which usually has to be placed in a set position within your site's directory structure, contains the URL of everyone else who has joined.

Usually, the rules stipulate the page cannot be altered in any way and must be downloaded before a certain date each month, otherwise you have to go through the signing up process all over again. The page, arguably, amounts to nothing more than free advertising for the link site itself, and because it exactly matches everyone else's downloaded page, search engines can easily distinguish such link pages from genuine link pages, penalizing each website accordingly.
