Sad news: Jack LaLanne, 96, fitness and health guru, dies at California home. I am saddened by the passing of the man who have inspired me to eat well and live longer. Over the years I would often visit his Web site at www.JackLaLanne.com for the latest and greatest health and fitness advice from Mr. LaLanne and Ms. Elaine.

In his memory, I have re-posted a recent letter to him, expressing my gratitude for the knowledge he share with fitness and health students like me.

The Los Angeles County coroner has ruled that 30-year-old Casey Johnson — the heiress of the pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson — died of natural causes: diabetic ketoacidosis.

What is Diabetic ketoacidosis?

Diabetic ketoacidosis, also termed diabetic acidosis, was the cause of Johnson’s death. It is a condition commonly associated with type 1 diabetes.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (or diabetic acidosis)…

  • is caused by a shortage of insulin.
  • is results in hypophosphatemia.
  • is commonly a diabetes complication occurring when glucose (sugar) in the blood is dangerously low or nonexistent due to insufficient insulin.

Since the initial announcement of the late socialite’s death, many shocked and saddened fans, people with diabetes and others have frantically searched for more information on the Internet about the deadly disease.
