Childrens Hoodies: Buying Risk-Free Clothes For Your Kids

In the US there is a ban on any top designed for children which has a drawstring attached to it. Whether it is on the hood, the neck or the waist all drawstrings on tops are banned. The ban was prompted by a number of deaths over the past few years. Children have been strangled by the string as they play on slides or get tangled up. Childrens hoodies should be bought when they do not have drawstrings attached. Without the drawstring they are good clothing for children.

Back To The Ban

There have been some major cases where big companies who manufacture or sell children’s clothes have been fined. The Consumer Product Safety Commission made tops with drawstrings illegal as they pose a serious risk to the safety of the child wearer.

The tragic death of a three year old boy whose string got attached on a slide and he suffocated made these rulings more open to the public. One reason why retailers have gotten away with stocking children’s clothes with drawstrings is because not very many parents knew that they were banned. The CPSC is quicker to find illegal retailers with the public more knowledgeable about the ban.

In Seattle the large department store Nordstrom was fined $60,000 for stocking banned tops. Four more retailers have received a collective fine of $600,000 over the past few years. Hills Sportswear and Kohl’s were two of them. A girl also died when using playground equipment as a drawstring in a Hills sweatshirt got caught and she suffocated.

Buying safe clothing for your child is a responsibility of every parent. Thinking about the day to day activities of your child and how their clothing could pose a risk is important. Bike pedals can be a place that loose trousers can get caught causing accidents for example.

Hoodies should not be banned all together. When children wear safe hoodies they look really nice. They are comfy which means children like wearing them. For autumn and winter they are wardrobe staples.
